Before fertilizing plants, moisten the soil with about half the irrigation amount. Apply fertilizer and continue with the second half of the irrigation. If you throw dry fertilizer onto dry soil and hope the rain will wash it down, you may be in for a nasty surprise. Rain may not materialize and the fertilizer will be wasted. Or rainfall will be slight, causing the fertilizer to be carried to the roots in concentrated amounts that can injure them. Or a lot of rain might fall and the fertilizer will be washed away in the surface runoff. Although it’s welcome, seldom does rain fall in the way we want it to during summer months.
